well i managed to push to top 100 on sc for first week or 2 this league with solar guards they are far from crap the faster you go (recomment brightbeak shield slam) the faster they clear w/ insane coverage + teledrag

flame golem suffers due to their spellset
magma balls : good dps and coverage... basically the only reason flame golem works at all
incinerate : comically bad, does
no damage and has next to no coverage
flame wave : does less dmg than magma balls but way more than incinerate, trash coverage/range and overall not good. Even in melee range i prefer to see magma balls.
meanwhile solar guard
throw fire : stronk coverage multiple screens pierces targets and wrecks everything
lazer : melts half the screen with a big burst of fire damage. It looks and feels a bit like the railgun from quake III arena so very satisfying
It's not just about output, consistency is nice, w/ solar guards you know they will cast something useful in any situation as they don't have anything that sucks. Flame golems are less reliable when going fast, you either have to go slower or go back occassionally because your teledragged golems decided it would be good to try to incinerate a pack. Necro also cannot afford this bullshit as much nowadays with bone offering self-nerf.
but as far as straight singletarget dmg goes, not sure which wins, i know for sure golementalist minions have them beat in durability, ele immune + mad regen. p much immortal. solar guards can die to a combo of ele reflect + other monsters cannot die mod very fast
The dps is similar enough not to matter.. the name of the game is coverage, and flame golem cant rly compete w/ gmp flame beams going 2+ screens distance and laser pew pew hitting entire packs at once with pinpoint accuracy, the magma balls on flame golems are quite good but it's only 1 of 3 spells. I would never consider using flame golem over solar guards unless I was going to be doing pvp/HoGM (resummoning is way easier w/ golems + they would die less in general) or they changed it so that they only have the magma ball attack
