As a league starter, you don't have to worry too much about stuns/freezes as life and life nodes are plentiful compared to ES + with overleeching and vaal pact, survivability is a lot better.
Late game, ES does come up in terms with life (barely since no vaal pact still), but the investment is close to 10ex spent on es for every 1 ex spent on life.

I think life is more appealing mechanically, anyways, straight forward enough for a noob like me and seems (as your points about cost indicates) easier to find life gear, too!
I played Enkhi's selfcast arc SC SSF this betrayal. I just felt that, even at 5,8k hp and MoM 2,3k unreserved mana, a lot of shit (or well, pimped geared ranked syndicate members mostly) would just one shot me, or very close to. The massive adds in syndicate encounters caused fps drops like mad on my laptop, too, so yeah i died alot on t13-16maps vs them (t12 and below was a cakewalk mostly tho). Even at 0-40% chaos res (depending on gear), and 80%elemental res, things just killed me quite easy on occasion. The %physDR was kinda shit though i'll admit.
The 10k++ es builds seemed appealing, then.
