Yes u dont have to play in the league, but in poe, every new league brings new content, so lots of ppl play the league. U wont lose your character, it will just transfer over to standard once the league is over. I highly recommend going to poe forum and following a guide

Yup. Also the poe official forum has guides to follow under class/builds. Find one for whatever class/ascendancy/skill you want to do

Good tip. Find guide with any character and make it same. You will destroy few chars before you understand it. Download filter sink, path of building fork, awakened lootfilter and enjoy game.

Check few tutorials at yt, how to make currency, how to play run quests, maps amd have fun!
