Hi :hello:

I was thinking to myself what kind of discussion can we have about golf here on the JSP forums that would spark some interest as well as some discussion, while at the same time helping improve your/our game(s), which is everybody's ultimate goal in the game of Golf. And too me, the easiest way to improve your golf game is by listening (or in this case reading) what others have to say that has helped them improve their own game...

Now we all have heard and know about the centuries old golfing tips like: "Keep your head down through the swing", and "Keep your left arm straight". Things/Tips like this are wide spread and common knowledge. But what else have you heard, or do you do that helps improve your game? Maybe something you had an experienced golfer tell you, or something you came up with on your own. Anything from a certain routine, stretch, mechanic, movement, thought, etc.. or anything else that has helped you.

The purpose of this thread is to bring to light certain techniques and tips that we all have as golfers in the D2jsp community, and sharing them with each other to possibly improve each others game, and to create a fresh, interesting, productive discussion about Golf we all can enjoy and take something from. Even if it is just throwing out a different ideas for someone to try, whether they end up liking it or not.

Share your tip with us, explain how you came out this technique or who told you. Let us know how you do it, how it helps you, and how it can improve someones golf game (even if it's just yours!).

My Tip:
I will go first with a tip that has helped me. It came from my boss, an a avid golfer for the past 30 years and a single handicap golfer. He noticed that I was inconsistent with where I aimed my shots. Off the tee, or anywhere else like in the fairway, I seemed to aim the ball to an area I didn't want it to go. I would go up to a ball, take my practice swings, line up to a position I thought was straight, swing, and although I hit the ball straight, it was straight in a direction I was not intending the ball to travel. This was something I was doing consistently. I was having difficulty aiming my shots, I was having difficulty lining up correctly, and especially for the long shots.

So my boss let me in on a little tip he uses that has helped his game over the years. He told me look and see where I want the ball to land. Okay, I did, which was no different than what I was doing before. But then he told me, "okay... now stand behind the tee and look for an object 10-20 yards in front of your tee that lines up directly in between in your path from the tee and the goal landing placement you want for your golf ball (It can be anything from a leaf, to a rut, to a piece of debris. Anything that stands out.). Now don't even look at the green, or the down the fairway, just aim and position yourself like your hitting towards this object you selected in shortly in front of you." You know your lined up to hit directly where you want to hit, you already confirmed the straight path when you stood behind the tee. But having the object much closer to you, it is much easier to align yourself correctly, and aim yourself towards this close object than it is a far away landing zone.

Now go up and take your shot, continue aiming towards the spot on the ground in front of you that you lined up between the tee and your desired landing zone. Take your full swing, and if you can hit the ball straight, you will be able to correctly aim your shots to land and travel where you want them too. Through the straight line path you lined up using an aid shortly in front of you to line up your shot.

So I did what he said, and my god it worked. Such a simple idea, that dramatically helps a beginner golfer learn how to aim their shots to land where they want it to land. It has helped me hit better balls. If others are having the same issue, which would be lining up wrong, or aiming off target and finding out after you hit the ball and watch it travel to a place you didn't intend or thought you were aiming at, I suggest trying this little tip to see if it helps you.

So that is my tip that helped improved my game. I hope I explained it well enough. I hand it over to other golfers in the D2jsp community to respond and contribute their own tips that help improve their game. Who knows, your tip may help one of us help improve our own game.

Thank you.

I'll copy and paste this from a thread I just posted in. Mind you I'm no pro, but I consider bogey golf to be pretty good amateur play for a guy who gets out 3-4 times a month.

Don't buy into any of the corporate marketing with golf clubs. Sure they put a lot of technology into the clubs, but the changes year to year are so miniscule that only the top 1% of players will even feel the difference with solid contact.

My advice: Get a used set of clubs online (or in a store if you can find them) and have them properly fit. Properly fit clubs are much much more important than anything besides what clubs or what ball you have.

As for what ball to use: This is where I tell you to go see a pro and get a lesson or two. you can find them on google easy. Don't settle with someone on price alone, look for someone who speaks about the golf swing in a way you can understand it. The pro should be able to give you statistics about your swing; most notably, swing speed. Swing speed will tell you everything you need to know about distance and control.

Most importantly, don't just jump into the big courses. Start out by going to the range multiple times and then going to your local muni course - the par 3s in the city. Don't worry about score, just focus on controlling your shot. You don't get better at ANY sport by going out and playing the game, the range is there for practice and that is how people get good.

I'd like to tell you to get a book too. I read The Secrets of Scoring by Raymond Floyd. It's a good book for beginners and teaches how to approach the golf game - mentally.

And an ending note: Golf is not a game of linear progress; that is, your scores will not keep going down and down as you get better. You will shoot a 90 one day, then a 93, then a 89, then a 120. But as you improve your scores will get lower. Your high scores will be lower and your low scores will be lower.

Keep at it, it takes people lifetimes to be decent at this sport.

I have been teaching golf lessons professionally for 12 years and the number one problem for all amateurs is the slice. It's either a slice that starts left and moves right, or even more dangerous is the slice that starts at the target and moves right. Want to know the main reason for this? easy... your clubface is open.

The best way to cure this is with forearm rotation, make it feel like your right forearm is "coming over your left one" during the downswing. That will help close the clubface and help you to hit straighter shots.

I played 18 yesterday morning and I had to put my driver away because my slice was too dramatic for the fairways that are too closely lined with houses for my slice :( Didn't want to break a window :(

But yeah, the slice is my #1 problem. The very few times I've been able to luckily hit the ball straight at what I would consider my ideal swing speed, I was able to carry "Range" balls 250 yards in the air, so it excites me what I can do with real balls if I can fix my slice :( Literally when the slice starts, it starts going completely horizontal and travels like 100 yards out and 150 yards to the right... :(

I have a long back yard, so I'll be trying out different techniques hitting foam balls with my driver in my backyard.

when you putt create a system that works for yourself that is consistent.

i know some people have like a seven step system where they look at the ball toward the hole, check the ground, 3) walk back to the ball, 4) practice swing, 5) line up putter with ball, 6) look at hole, 7) look at ball, 8) hit ball

only 2 things effect the flight of the golf ball, clubface angle at impact and swingpath. Make sure your clubhead path comes from the inside (swing around your body) and get your clubface square.
