Now that I have my shoes all wrapped up, time to move onto buying a wood. I already know I want an R11 fairway wood, as it matchs not only my R11 driver, but the white head will also match my new white shoes... woot!

Anyways, I'm undecided on going for a 3 wood or 5 wood. Right now I'm leaning towards a 5 wood.

I carry driver, then 3-Iron, so I want to put a put in between.

Anything I should be considering before making my decision. I think I rather hit a little farther than my 3-iron, then hit a little shorter than my driver. So that's why I am leaning towards 5-wood.

ANy opinions? I'm ready to go out and but it today if I make up my mind :D

Thanks!

The loft of your 3-iron? Usually 3 irons are around 19 degrees loft (check your club brand's website for the specs on loft), and with your R11 driver it can be adjusted anywhere from 9-12 degrees.

So that means you have a 7-10 degree gap in there.

Well first off, 5 woods are usually around 19 degrees as well, which is the same as your 3 iron. I just checked out the R11 5 wood on their site and its specs list it as 19 degrees. Meaning you would be wasting your time carrying 2 clubs with the same degree.

3 woods tend to be around 15ish degrees, it would be the in-between club for your driver and 3-iron.

Based on this, get a 3 wood.

But if you don't wish to take my word for it, just do a little bit of research on the degree of your 3-iron, and what you have your driver's set degree at and fill in the gap accordingly.

I know I wouldn't want to waste a club in my bag carrying 2 clubs of the same degree, but some people do it... Personally I removed my 3-iron and bought a 5 wood, and also carry a 3-wood.

I hear you, and you bring up a very good point. I've got to check my 3-iron degree, thing is, I'm going to check it for the set of irons I plan on buying, not the ones I have currenty as I plan on replacing them too! And they are an old pair of Snake Eyes, have no idea if I can find the 3 iron degree for these. I have no idea how old they are, just borrowing them.

The Titleist AP2 set 3-iron I want is a 21 degree.

Hmmm..... decisions decisions!

AP2's huh? Can't go wrong with Titleist.

Either way, if you get the AP2's and the 3 iron is 21 degrees, the 2 degree difference between the 5 wood and 3 iron is not big enough to warrant purchasing/carrying a 5 wood imo. You would be left with a 7-10 degree gap from your driver to 5 wood, and would pretty much be in the same position you're in now.

Glad I could help, 3 wood is always a go-to club off the tee, it's always good to have it in your bag.

I can smack mine pretty good off the fairway as well, a good 270.

I'm looking to use it off the tee at times, but also in the fairway as well. I could see myself already on a couple long par 5's using it off the fairway, after a underperforming drive :(

3 irons typically have around 20 degrees of loft, but...

that's not what's going to make the difference in distance between that and a 5 wood. A typical 5 wood is about 4 inches longer and the head carries more mass, adding at least 50 yards in distance increase.

Does anyone ever use 4-woods? Or is that a oddball that no one uses, kinda like the 6 iron :P

I do want to use only one wood. I think it will be too much to have a driver and 2 woods huh?

I'm also sticking to the 14 club rule, and rather use the extra club for a wedge instead of 2 woods.

4 wood could be an idea. If I had only one club to get, I would go with a 16 degree hybred. It should act like a 4 wood in terms of distance, but be way easier to hit out of the longer grass
