Plug in the VGA to the computer tower and into the tv, then switch it to the VGA option, usually called Component (via the input button on the TV or remote).

I used to do this all the time. Now I have 3 monitors and eyefinity :p

What video card do u have?
Make sure u have the latest video drivers installed.
And get the catalyst control center

How many video outputs does ur video card have?
U can't use a combination of ur video card and your on board video card

Not sure about your computer but on my laptop there is a button that is used to switch the screen output. Mine is the function key and f4.
