If I register a diablo 2 key on blizzard.com, what exactly does this do?
I want to know because my cdkeys are always in use by people that aren't me and if I were to buy new cdkeys, would registering them prevent other people from using them.

just with starcraft 2 a system has been introduced to prevent others from using your registered key

on d2 its not possible to prevent other accounts/computers/ip's to use your account

It provides "Blizzard" with information that helps them help customers in the future in regards to issues based on how people use their products, etc. Also, you might receive updates via E - Mail I believe.

Actually, registering the game online will convert your 16 digit key into a new 26 digit key, so that might help you kicking off those who are using your keys. I'm not sure if it works, but I guess it's worth a try.

Does the conversion make the 16bit key unusable?

No, you'll still be able to install the game with CDs and the 16 digit key. However, it could be that the login system has a higher priority for online registered keys, so I'd really just give it a try.
