I was looking to buy these certain jewels, and when I went into trade the guy asked me to socket them in the item right away in the game before I even bought them...seemed fishy so I obviously didn't...any insight on this?

Whenever you begin to feel a bit suspicious of something, simply use a Mediator for a trade man.

He was probably selling duped jewels. If he offered you to socked them into item by yourself, well you could be fine. But if he wanted you to hand over item to him in order HE put it in - that's most likely a scam attempt.
However you did good by asking a question first

Jewels weren't from legit source probably. Copied items may gone. That's why he wanted you to put them asap in to the item.

No, he just doesn't want the jewel to poof on you so really he is just try to help you. Cause once a jewel is socketed it can't poof.

However if he never stated the jewel was duped, then I would avoid trading with him in the future.
