Malwarebytes anti-malware + Spybot search and destroy is what I would recommend.
There isn't really a "best" anti-virus out there.

Oh touche, and yes, the payed version; sorry for not clarifying that.
These aren't really programs that prevent problems, but rather deal with them. It does depend on what you're looking for, though. I would agree that they are both good, and I would definitely get Spybot S&D in top of whatever you choose, but they aren't anti-virus in the sense that I believe you mean.
I would personally say that 'avast!' is brilliant; it has been proven time and time again to be using the least RAM out of all major anti-virus programs, is non-intrusive, and completely free (although there is a paid version available). Avira is also another decent choice and is quite similar in interface to 'avast!' (might've changed since I last used it, though). Kaspersky is not that bad, but a lot of users say they have trouble updating the thing as it doesn't auto-connect to download the latest virus signatures consistantly. I would advise against Norton and Nod32
very strongly, as they are notoriously difficult to remove, are very intrusive, and WILL delete programs such as keygens, if you use them, as 'viruses' without asking. Even little bits of basic code I have written in the past have been detected as 'viruses'.
I would advise removing any default anti-virus / firewall related things, as they are RAM hogs, cause many connectivity problems, and are almost entirely useless.
