First off, I'll state that I'm trying to find the answer for my buddy, so please don't ask me why I would get an iPhone without a data plan.

Hopefully the title clearly state my question. Is there anyway to use an iPhone 3g without a data plan and not be charged for internet? (AT&T) Feel free to pm me the answer or post it here. Thanks in advance.

Of course I had my first iphone too without any data plan. Order it directly from Apple.

From prior researches, as soon as AT&T detect an iPhone or any smartphone, it'll automatically add a data plan.

Well they can't really do that without asking the buyer first. I'm sure you can use a smartphone without a data plan, it shouldn't be a problem.

I can't give you detailed information on AT&T since I do not live in the US, but I was able to use my iPhone just like a normal phone without any internet contract.

I've read about APN changer, but I've heard both negative and positive review on it. Anyway got information on this, please let me know.

There used to be an app that would disguise your phone as a different one. (a dumbphone instead of a smartphone) I don't know if it's still around.

if your friend is with AT T and is on a contract with him, he has to have a data pack plan with the Iphone. There's no way around that one. If he has a pay as you go account, it looks like he can go without the data pack plan on the cheaper pay as you go plan. If he chooses the $50/month plan he does have to buy the data pack plan but if he uses the 10 cents/minute plan or $2/day plan and stays off the internet, it looks like he doesn't have to pay for the data pack plan.

e/ i did check the website again, it does say this at the bottom:

Smartphone users: You may use your smartphone on all GoPhone plans. A data package is required to use any data services on your device. Pay-per-use data is not available on smartphones.

I'll look into that and I think it's called Boss Pref or something along that line, but I'm not sure. If anyone else got any solution please let me know.
