Is this a reaccuring issue? Or just happened once.

If a reaccuring event , reinstalling should fix it.

Your .mpq files might be corrupt, Try reinstalling Diablo II as IzFluffy mentioned, and the problem should be solved. :)

reinstaled...still does not work

Did you install it with CDs? Files on the CD might be corrupt. The online version could fix the issue.
Deinstall Diablo 2, check the registry (with RegCleaner) for any remaining Diablo 2 content (and eventually remove it). Afterwards install the online version.
