Okay, currently having problems with my Gateway desktop.

Every time I turn it on, it runs okay but won't let me open up anything. It works fine on Safe mode though.

Have ran Avast and deleted the viruses. Would doing the Windows update help at all? Also, when I clicked on problems it says my BIOS needs to be upgraded.

Any help would be appreciated..

maybe ur BIOS need some upgrade to Vista/Windows 7 to be functionally?
try to check ur BIOS and enable ACPI function (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) if u use Win 7 or Vista at your computer.

Like a fuckload of Trojans/Malware. I have a feeling I didn't get them all with Avast.

You can reset your machine back to its factory conditions Kima. This will delete any corrupted files on your machine and restore them to their healthy ways.

How do I do this?

Can't use System Restore, as there are no restore points. =/

on that black screen, do you see your cursor?
can you open task manager? (ctrl+alt+delete)

you also had a MBR virus (master boot record)
this must have corrupted the boot sector

try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

if you dont understand something or if it doesn't work, let me know
if you dont have your windows cd, we will have to use another method
