it has to be a direct link, post the link you got and I can help you with making it to a direct link

www.imageshack.com

Make sure you take the direct link and put it as your avatar

Did you use the direct link as an avatar?

This guide explains how to get the direct link when uploading with ImageShack.

A different option is to use http://imgur.com/ as a hoster.
