How to i use an animation as an avatar? I see a number of people have them-- i just wanted to join the cool kids...

It's a .GIF Image and can be uploaded just like a normal Avatar.

that's what i thought, but when i try to upload a .gif in the same way as a .jpg, it says that's not a supported format-- what am i missing?

Where do you try to upload them? Tinypic works flawlessly with .GIF Images

If you're using Tinypic.com, try it again. Tinypic always goes wrong the first time lately.
You could also use Imgur. I heard it's a pretty good way to upload your pictures

A .gif file needs to be uploaded as a .gif file and not a .jpg other wises it won't stay animated.
