Are these good spec's

It depends on what you want it for. It'll be a VERY fast/powerful computer, but it's going to have terrible battery life and it's not going to be very portable with a 17 inch screen.

It will definitely work for gaming. Solid video card, enough RAM, powerful CPU you should be fine.

Is 2900 way overpriced or can i find a equally as good laptop for cheaper ?

In my experience Alienware equiptment is always over priced. I'm not sure about any alternatives though as I haven't shopped for a laptop in quite some time, you could make a post here: http://forums.d2jsp.org/forum.php?f=188
