Its all depends on the Ilvl of the items I think.
but just to let you know 6 sock crystal sword's can be dropped from monsters in nightmare / hell.

if it was found in hell mode then it will get 6 sockets

im read at arreat summit somthing like this: lazruk will allwas give max sox ( depends how many sox max item can give )
i was sox cs from normal / or nm not shure and im get 6sox ( was need it for gf barb )

larzuk will give max sockets based on the ilevel of the item.
as in, it doesn't matter whether you use larzuk in normal, nightmare, or hell to socket it.

however, the maximum sockets on an item of a certain ilevel is capped.

from arreat summit:
"# of Sockets
The difficulty level plays into the number of sockets that will show up on an item. If you want the most sockets, you need to be on Hell Difficulty, and in later areas of the game, if possible. "
