I downloaded and opened a file which contains a virus. When I opened it many threats have been detected by my antivirus (avg). What the virus did was cutting links from my files (applications movies browser...) to the windows registry. Then I did a backup and came back three days before I got the virus. After, I was able to read movies and music and I was able to do pretty much everything but the virus was still there because backup dont kill these. I downloaded Malwarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy and SUPERAntiSpyware and downloaded the updates for each of them and finally scanned my PC in safe mode. Malwarebytes found 34 threats, Spybot found 1 and SAS found 21. I would like to use Kaspersky to scan but when I try to install it, it says that Avast is still in my computer even if I uninstalled it a year ago.

So I have two questions

1) Do you think my computer is now safe?
2) I tried to remove avast with the Avast remover, which can be found on their site) but it didn't work. Should I try to remove it directly into safe mode by delete it directly from the windows registry by using regedit?

Thanks

Always make sure that you are running one antivirus (along with spybot search and destroy they are fine), not multiple.
If SB S&D did fix the problem along with one of the anti virus programs you mentioned above ( I recommend Malwarebytes), you should be fine.
Make sure to scan your PC regularly and I recommend cleaning out your registry too (Ccleaner is a good program for that), since the virus messed around in it as well.

About removing Avast, have you tried these steps as well?
1) Click on Start, Control Panel
2) Open Add/Remove Programs
3) Find Avast in the Programs list and highlight it
4) Click Remove and follow the prompts to uninstall Avast

Have you also tried removing the program with the uninstall utility, but in safe mode?

Well I have looked i the Add/Remove programs and it is uninstalled and also the Avast file is no more in the Program Files too.
It is why I looked for avast remover but when I use the remover I cannot find the avast file...
The only location with an avast file was into "regedit" command but im not sure if deleting a file into the windows registry is the best thing to do

Deleteing the Avast key in regedit shouldnt make a difference if it is under local machine\software

Also you could try downloading the Windows Install Cleanup utility to make sure it is completely gone.

Remove AVG before installing kaspersky.
I would scan with rogue killer before say it's safe.

The program it is called is msicuu2.exe

This will explain it but microsoft quit offering the dl to it because The utility was retired by Microsoft on June 25, 2010, due to conflicts with Office 2007.......SO BECAREFUL not to uninstall anything you are not familiar with

1)imo no ... the virus usually copy himself to many places in case some1 do the backup
2)if it don't run at all ... chec the processus (is that the corect word in english?) on internet and kill them all by windows task manager (ctrl + alt + del) and then remove from registry only if your safe about going play there else id retry their remover
