As far as your second question, about the yarn, have you tried putting a thin layer of wax on it? Just melt a candle in the microwave / burn a candle for a bit, and put a thin layer of it over the yarn. This will definitely solve the "fuzzy" issue, and it'll be semi water proof as well.
