Double click on the volume icon in the system tray and lower the noise of that application.

If ur talking about on ur PC completly muting the sound
Double click on the speaker symbol on the bottom right of ur desktop next to the clock & check the "mute" box
U can also go Start

control Panel

sound controls/Audio options & mute it from there
If u just want a specific Application muted.... Go to the applications "options" & look for sound/music controls to lower/mute its sound
He is talking about Mario, that DOS-type game and that sound comes from PC Speaker which is integrated inside PC.
I don't have XP right now, nor PC (sitting on my laptop), but you could try looking for "PC Speaker" in your audio settings or other settings somewhere.
Maybe even Mario has such an option and if not, then check that directory with Mario.exe, there should be some files responsible for sound, like setup or setsound.
There were also some special programs for those DOS-type games...
If still no results then guess I can't help you right now
