Hey mate,

My two cents;

First of all do NOT get Linux. Windows isnt good either but it beats Linux.
Vista is really crap, I recommend getting Windows 7 somewhere.

The problem seems to be wireless, as said before, your card probably cannot handle the encryption together with the data.
You should check your wireless card, update the drivers and try again. Such problems can be very specific as there are a lot of different routers and different cards, so a lot of combinations are possible.
Just take a step down every time, AES (WPA2), if it still gives you problems, switch to WPA, after that switch to WEP.
WEP is such an easy encryption, that no cards should have any problems with it.

Another thing you could take a look at; at which channel is your router broadcasting?
For example, there can be interference with other wireless networks, and some cards only function correctly on some channels, for example the Wii only functions correctly on channel 11.

I can recommend you just put down some lan cables in your house, Ive got a laptop as well, but I use it for work and leisure, so at home Ive got a connection where I am the most. Itll also get you better download speeds possibly.

Also said before, WEP is crackable, just use a passphrase (no words), random combination of letters, numbers and signs to make it harder to crack, this way you cannot bruteforce it easily anymore.

Windows 7 is vista without the bugs you're dedicating 1/2 your rig to the OS alone, its flashy bells and whistles. Unless you have a custom built rig which can handle windows 7 via 4-5+ DDR3 / quad core beefed up processor (which this guy does not have if he can't even power vista) you are most likely going to be getting shitty speeds.

I can do so much more on linux then windows. If I have to use windows I use XP SP3. Not to mention I don't have to get 3rd party software to connect to my servers ;)

Won't matter they are both vulnerable to the same attacks.

I mean which one will give me less overheads.

That's a lot to check out! People in my accomodation are actually whinging a fair deal about how often the router is being reset, but I'll bloody well try them anyway! :)

Isn't there the whole compatability issue, though? I know Linux allows for more customisation, but I'm pretty sure less programs run with it. It's very interesting as an OS, to say the least, can't say I've much experience with it.

WINE lets you run any windows program on linux. Linux uses universal drivers for your devices. I put it on my laptop and my wireless / sound / video were all working flawlessly RIGHT off the bat.

Not to get a Linux vs Windows 7 war going but I think for most users Windows is still the best solution.
It does everything I want and speeds are just fine.
Im not looking for high-end games, which windows 7 can play, I actually doubt WINE can run high-end games, but I cannot say because I dont know anything about it.
Same goes for Linux in windows, Ive got some VMWare machines, in which I can run Backtrack or other versions of Windows.

Using a Virtual machine doesn't give the OS credit. I use Windows in my VM and it sucks in there. I run WoW / D2 off WINE and anything I've tried works fine. Linux uses ALOT less RAM / Processing power.

Its all personal preference really but I'm just saying windows uses alot more power then it should. But I think we can all agree here when I say Macs suck.
