Anti virus software can be and usually is a resource hog.

Cleaning all the dust out of the inside of your machine is a good idea as stated by newporg.

I would recommend an air blower of some sort.

Be careful of static.

If you are talking about the "blue screen of death" that can be for a variety of reasons.

In older machines wrong or corrupted drivers can cause this.

It may have nothing to do with the games at all and may be related to some sort of other software or hardware you are running.

Try closing all non essential programs and playing the game.

mmmmk ill start by doing these. If im out of air can i use q-tips to get the dust off the none chip areas?

I shut down all programs but Avast and i click the run game/silent mode as well.

Ya im thinking something may be curropted cause before we rebooted the comp it ran wow and D2 fine without ever freezing.

Before doing all of that check to make sure its not a stupid driver error, cuz doing all that would be a waste if it is.

Your RAM is over heating or your CPU is draggin down. Try checking your ram chips to see if there is any dark spots on them / upgrade them to see if that helps. If its the CPU just junk the damn thing. Still could be a driver error though.

Be sure to check your device manager to make sure nothing is out of date.

I had a USB wireless adapter that would cause a BSOD randomly could be on for hours or 10 mins and I'd get BSOD till I found the right driver.

Usually I would say driver but with the randomness and lengthiness I would say you may have a wiring/connection issue that occasionally wiggles or something similar.

Do you have USB sticks plugged in when it happens? Those things getting wiggled can cause it.

It could be a heating issue causing it to trigger.

I would still suggest airing it out. Dust can often cause these sorts of issues.
