This is not true.
The morherboard's BIOS determines which device is used to output to a monitor. Onboard GPUs can be used with a video card for two AMDs, but IDK if Nvidias can do this, too.

You cannot run a integrated graphics card along side a installed graphics card? The BIO's detects the installed graphics card but without the proper drivers installed into the directory then the BIO's will not change it's default to the newly added graphics card.

An AMD onboard GPU and an AMD card can be ran together on separate monitors, but I do not own an Nvidia card or motherboard with an IGP, so I cannot comment about Nvidia.
The BIOS will choose what the GPU is to be output from, and Windows has to follow what the BIOS wants regardless of if there is a driver for it or not; Windows will use its generic driver to run the GPU unless it has had another driver installed, such as an official one from Nvidia, AMD, or whatever the card is.

This sounds about right.. I run Nvida, that's why I referenced my information like I did.

Have you installed your new video drivers? even if you install a new video card, without the drivers the motherboard will default back to the integrated graphics card.

how do I do this?

Visit the website of your GPU{graphics card} and search for the newest driver to install and download.

Do you have the manual or GPU box in which the GPU was packaged in?
