As far as training methods go, you have 3 basic options. They are: Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement and Punishment.
Positive Reinforcement is by far the best. How this works is when your dog (or anyone for that matter) does something you want him/her to do, you give a treat. A treat is something that the dog wants that he/she doesn't always get. (Bacon works wonders)
Negative Reinforcement works about in the middle as far as effectiveness goes. Negative Reinforcement is when you take something out of the dogs environment that has a positive impact (I know a little weird). An example of this is making it normal to have a shock collar on and when the dog is good for a day, you remove the collar for a day.
Punishment is the final method of the three. It is also the least effective. Punishment is simply beating the dog with a newspaper or flicking it on the nose when it is bad. The downside to this with animals is that if they feel threatened they can turn on you.
Also, take note that the dog is an animal. Animals do have their own set of instincts you won't be able to control. Sigfried and Roy learned this the hard way.
