Also the IP the ISP gives you is dynamic, your router hands out ip addresses which CAN be set to static via the router configuration. But that is all besides the point. Your problem is your computer itself. The network card can't handle the traffic that you're trying to put it through. If its a laptop get a USB wireless adapter. If its a tower upgrade the WLAN card on the MOBO which is most likely plugs into the PCI Express slot slot. But BEFORE that upgrade your drivers via the device manager and automatically find updates on the internet. Or contact your computer's maker's site and get the drivers manually.

An encryption adds "wireless overhead" which means its more shit it has to process. Your computer might not have the processing power to do this. The other computers on the network probably do. Vista sucks hands down it uses up so much power that most machines that came out with it couldn't handle it. The laptop I have right now is Vista but I cleared it off and run a linux distribution.

Actually, I just tried to change the encryption and was locked out of my network. Had to set the authentication to 'OPEN' and remove even the password. I'm confused as to whether my network is actually encrypted anymore or not. Can you remove encryption on just one machine and leave the others running it?

I personally get this, which I'm surprised at, considering some of the crap speeds I get. My upload speed is also terrible, and I'm not sure why that is.

Also, if you could help with linux, that would be incredibly helpful. If nothing else, I'd just enjoy playing with it, seeing how it works etc. I've been told it isn't compatable with a lot of things yet and is difficult, though.

I've actually got an age-old Ubuntu OS disk sitting on my shelf, Vista just doesn't recognise disks I put into it. Ugh.

Its a good idea to have a WEP, I mean the average user is an idiot and can barely figure out network configuration so you can block a decent amount of people from accessing your network. But if the right person wants to get in, they'll get in. Fortunately I'm 90% sure nothing on your network is worth cracking into so you should be fine with a WEP.
