I'm not exactly positive, but check the agreements when using an iPhone. There might be something in there that requires a data plan for the phone. Which is why they only sell the phones with the data plans (as far as I remember).

I told you to read into the APPLE REQUIREMENTS specifically. Sure, you are on an AT&T base plan, but if Apple requires you to have a data plan if you use their phone, that is a whole new story.

Your Friends best bet is to contact AT&T and ask them if he can use it without having a Data plan

I have Verizon so idk about AT&T... But I can call the customer service department & have them Block/Disable Data usage from my phone so I can't use it

AT&T automatically add the data plan if they detect you're using any smartphone. Thank you for your responses though.

If you have an iPhone 3G, which I have right now, the Apple service requirement of the phone (regardless of the service carrier) MAY REQUIRE A SERVICE PLAN TO BE ADDED. That is all I am saying. Not sure what you do not understand.

No shit sherlock. That's why he made the thread is because AT&T, not may, but REQUIRED data service to be added and he's wondering if there's any way to get around this requirement...
