So I was researching sites for information for school project, and then when i clicked on a site something popped up it said something like:
MAlicious things may be in your computer. Do a security check?
(but of course more official-sounding.
I immediately just turned off the computer, and restarted in safe mode with networking. i dont have any anti-virus programs, and im not sure if its an actual virus.. what should I do?

I DONT MEAN FOR ANYONE TO GET A VIRUS IF THIS HAPPENs, but if you go on google.com, and type in
"helsinki finland average altitude"

its the second website down that this occured with me

if its the thing where the website is telling you if found a bunch of viruses then the website is giving you a trojan. happened to me.

you're going to need to download/install anti-virus or malware software on your computer and run it. you can get AVG or malwarebytes, both are good ones

don't know if you actually have anything on your computer but just in case.. it may be a start

Since you opened an internet page, downloading Malwarebytes is the best options. Through your browser you can mainly catch malware.
Here is a link to download Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Perform a full scan when running the program.

open your browser again and go in its history (do not open the site again obviously, but try to find the link)
if its anything related to free anti-virus / fast anti-virus scan / etc... (you could pm me the link, make sure to remove the http and .com or the end, only PM me the name of the site so i can verify with my virtual machine)
that probably means it was a compromised (hacked) site that redirected to that FAKE scanner page
the fake scanner page alone does nothing,it just scares the user onto downloading a program (fake anti-virus), the program either appears after a certain amount of time or when you click on anything in the window (from what I've tested, it doesn't automatically download anything (drive-by-download / exploits)
you're safe if you haven't downloaded the fake anti-virus

try to protect yourself next time, avast will easily stop the redirection and block those fake scanner pages, i suggest using that next time
make sure all your add-ons are up to date (java/flash player/ adobe... etc)
and you also need a firewall/anti-malware
get malwarebytes anti-malware OR spybot s&d OR ad-aware

good luck
