So I was researching sites for information for school project, and then when i clicked on a site something popped up it said something like:
MAlicious things may be in your computer. Do a security check?
(but of course more official-sounding.
I immediately just turned off the computer, and restarted in safe mode with networking. i dont have any anti-virus programs, and im not sure if its an actual virus.. what should I do?
\
open your browser again and go in its history (do not open the site again obviously, but try to find the link)
if its anything related to free anti-virus / fast anti-virus scan / etc... (you could pm me the link, make sure to remove the http and .com or the end, only PM me the name of the site so i can verify with my virtual machine)
that probably means it was a compromised (hacked) site that redirected to that FAKE scanner page
the fake scanner page alone does nothing,
it just scares the user onto downloading a program (fake anti-virus), the program either appears after a certain amount of time or when you click on anything in the window (from what I've tested, it doesn't automatically download anything (drive-by-download / exploits)
you're safe if you haven't downloaded the fake anti-virus
try to protect yourself next time, avast will easily stop the redirection and block those fake scanner pages, i suggest using that next time
make sure all your add-ons are up to date (java/flash player/ adobe... etc)
and you also need a firewall/anti-malware
get malwarebytes anti-malware OR spybot s&d OR ad-aware
good luck
