What's hard about PvP is that the level really makes a difference. A decently geared 48 will still get cement rolled over by someone at level 53. You really need to be at cap level if you want to join on in. I got destroyed the first few rounds, but I went back and got like 3 levels higher. Made a huge difference.

You also have to realize that the large majority of players aren't paying more than 5 bucks for the game, AKA Battlepass which I could pay off from my surveys alone. I haven't put any money into the game, but I've won a few rounds so far. Get the edge on the leveling before heading into the arena.
