They think BattleGrounds is the only competitive thing and have no enlightenment about the game itself at its core when it comes to Rite of Exile, and Shadow Wars.
A Free to play player will eventually be able to 2 shot a $80,000 player during Rite of Exile because of in-game scaling. It is not designed for the rich to always be in control.
But again, the people saying you can't be competitive have no clue about anything except what their Gen X idol Asmongold says.

You don't need to spend more than $10 to be competitive. It really isn't that hard. DPS or support.
It's absolutely doable if you are good at gaming.

As for trading for Platinum, Save your FG. It's a huge loss to try to trade.
