in 1-2 years, the stuff you pay for now might be free but then you will have new gems, items and more.. sort of like an expansion without any actual content other than the new P2W stuff

I think you have it backwards. In 1-2 years, they will try to exploit the highly addicted and time-invested players with mandatory spending.
Right now, spending is actually optional. In 1-2 years, the hooks will be into some people deep enough that those people will feel virtually forced to spend, unless they want to immediately quit or deal with significant in-game discomforts.
And, quitting is very difficult in the heat of addiction and a feeling of high investment into something.
People will do crazy things, or perhaps just spend a little money, to avoid withdrawals and/or notable in-game discomforts.
This is one of the truly predatory aspects of addiction-centric F2P monetization; it's deferred and obscured pay-to-play, long bait-and-switch trickery. PoE made it a grotesque art form.
