I personally wouldn't marinade it. I really like soaking meats like chicken and pork in a brine for hours. It gives it nice flavor, and helps keep the meat moist and tender when you cook it. I would brine it, pan sear it and finish them in the oven after basting them with the bbq.
The brine that I made is 2 quarts of cold water, 2 tbsp kosher salt, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 garlic cloves, fresh thyme, peppercorns. Let that hang out for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator.
You could put some garlic, beer, thyme, and orange juice in the bbq sauce. Just salt/pepper the chicken, sear each side, put some bbq sauce on them and finish them off in the oven.
