ez, delicious, cheap, and nourishing soup enjoyed by the impoverished Mohawk and Seneca Indians of the Iroquois Nation:

2 big cans of hominy [not too big]
2 chunks of salt pork
a lot of ground pepper

Bring a soup pot of water to a boil. Drain the hominy. Cut up the salt pork. Put the salt pork and the hominy into the soup pot. Add ground pepper to taste, and let it cook for an hour and a half or so.

The Mohawks eat it like I've described, but the Senecas add celery and carrots and whatever other soupy vegetables they have around.

Yep, this is post-colonial. There were no pigs (or even wild boars) before the europeans brought them.

edit: Black pepper was imported too, along with carrots and celery. The only native food on that list is hominy lol.

watch the movie called king corn
it might be free on hulu, there's a farmer that says the cheapest lowest quality corn in history is currently being mass produced. aka maximize profits
cuz the corn requires less sunlight & water so they can pack it closer together & grow more corn per acre. but the good corn is purple corn
