Oatmeal is oatmeal... it will always taste oatmeal.
However they are different type of oatmeal, and this will affect taste and texture.
Always look for big flakes oatmeal (they call it coarse i think?) , avoid the small flakes that takes 5 minutes to cook..
Milk and brown sugar helps too.

I prefer steel cut oatmeal, even though it takes longer to cook. You could mix in some apple sauce if you are trying to avoid sugar. My fav will probably always be milk and brown sugar though. Try a drop of vanilla too, it changes the flavour. I don't think you can completely get rid of the oatmeal flavour though unless you drown it in other stuff - and then you lose the benifits :)

When the oatmeal is nearly finished cooking, add frozen mixed berries. The frozen berries will break apart in the hot oatmeal, flavoring the oats and leaving lots of berry chunks to enjoy. Sprinkle brown sugar over top before serving and your oatmeal is nearly a cobbler.

I like doing this as well, use different flavours other than just brown sugar, although it is good that way.
