I've always understood the only difference is the alcohol content.. Either way, i went to a local brewery last weekend, they didnt haveBrewDog Tactical Nuclear Penguin, bUT they were showcasing all the expensive beers.. They had Dogfish Head ChocLobster, which was incredible, but was 80 bucks for a growler.. Like an oyster stout, but with lobster.

Still working on my DBB Schwartz Lager, not sure what to work on next.. Thinking about maybe getting some Scotch or a bottle of pappy..

youve understood wrong, barley wine is a type of beer.

I'm Currently using Nottingham yeast i add the yeast into 100ml of water at 86F and let it set for 15 mins before pitching it

i would check some homebrew websites and see if u can find maybe an average OG or range of whats normal. I bet it was done correctly.

How are you mashing/sparging?

I mash and sparge in the same pot so it takes some time to cool the worts before adding it into the carboy

Yeah, the abv on my first two batches. Its the third and four were i increase thee amount of grains with the hydrometer giving the same reading of 1.035 that had me wondering what the heck was going on, but i just taste tested the four batch of beer in the primary, it has 6lb more grains then the first two, the taste of alcohol was much stronger and it still had a point left to convert 1.019ish

brewersfriend calculations on my four batch recipe:

Gravity at 100% Efficiency:
1.077 - max
Gravity at 75% Efficiency:
1.058
* Efficiency:
64.84%
Points / Pound / Gallon (ppg):
23.5

I think maybe my hydrometer isnt working correctly

Was going to suggest that maybe your hydrometer is not working correctly. You can test this by dissolving known amounts of table sugar in known amounts of water. Also, are you measuring gravity on cooled wort?

They have some ratios online that you can use, or you can always use an efficiency calculator (most have table sugar as an option). I would shoot for a higher reading of around 1.06 to 1.08 and then maybe one of plain tap water. If hydrometer comes back as working fine, then i would suggest looking at sparge/mashing technique

Mm.. Just picked up Southern Tier 2x Milk Stout to celebrate Stout day..

Never disappoints.

E: I've seen a lot recently about the Brewery.. I need to keep my eyes peeled for them.. My local brewery won one of the top 10 stouts from the East Coast, Evolution Rise Up stout
