Unless your steak is really thick and big, you shouldnt put it in the oven, just the pan is enough.

the best way to cook a steak in the oven is to broil it on high, on the top rack, using a broiling pan. It should be cooked hot and fast. keep and eye on it and flip the steak as needed. i wouldn't recommend rubbing bbq sauce on it prior to cooking - it might burn. brush it with oil and/or apply a dry rub or dont apply any thing at all. you could sear it first if you like. if your oven is hot enough. searing may not be necessary.

I slow cook a steak for 18 hours in the oven now and then, pretty awesome, i do it with thick wagyu, pan seared first, a bit of basil, garlic and salt rubbed in and its good to go.

ive done with veal chops. was gg. freeze before searing so you dont cook as much of the inside.
