On the milk carton, the expiration date was 2 days ago, its about 3/4 full and its a waste of money to just throw it away? Thinking about eating a big ass bowl of cereal if its safe ... well is it?

1) is it an expiration date, best buy date, or sell by date? if the former, i'd pour it out. if the latter two, then continue to step 2
2) when did you open the milk? if you opened it just recently, it's fine. if not, continue to step 3
3) how does it smell? if it doesn't smell fresh, i'd pour it out. if it smells fresh, continue to step 4
4) do you have health insurance? if not, i'd pour it out.

as i said in the pasta thread:

like anything, theres no hard and fast rule. it can depend on how cold your fridge is, where in the fridge it is, etc. ive had [milk] last [past the expiration], so its possible. if it smells 'off' or is [chunky] then dont use it. if it looks feels and smells fine then it probably is.

also, keep in mind that cheese yogurt and other dairy products are basically intentionally spoiled milk. so spoiled milk isnt necessarily harmful. a coworker of mine leaves milk on top of the fridge all the time to curdle overnight.

Honestly it should still be good, expiration dates USUALLY are sell by dates as far as buying it in a grocery store.

Most products (depending on what it is) will last well after its expiration date. About a week or two.

But yes, smell it first of course, and if it doesn't smell bad, take a LITTLE sip. If it tastes fine, drink it.

I drink more milk than anyone I've ever known, usually about a gallon a day, so I know my milk. Lol.

BUT, if you opened it like 2 weeks ago, and it's been sitting in your fridge after you opened it that long ago, the chances of it being bad are high.

But I just do the smell test, it's easy to know if it's bad or not just by opening the cap and taking a whiff...

was serious lol.

mark rippetoe is famous for his beginner's workout routine for building strength, and he advocates a gallon of milk a day as part of the diet since it's a cheap source of fat + protein + nutrients. was curious if you were on his workout/diet regime since like you said, not many people drink a gallon of milk a day :P
