Can you wear a protector stone on your char and also equip the same one on your merc?

1 on char, any kind, 1 on merc, any kind
protectors stone gives a merc a fairly big damage boost and 1% fade

But does the damage + and - only go to merc? I don't see the point of it (Not combimed enemy res or + and def not exp gained...)
