I watched an interview with PoE Chris Wilson (Not D3 Wilson).
He analyzed LoD content, specifically how it modified Classic: Act V, Jewels, Ethereals, Elite Uniques, Crafting, Runewords, Charms, Class Specific Items, Mercenaries following between Acts.

Summarized below are his opinions.

How do you feel about how LoD changed Classic and their impact on core gameplay?

Content: Well Executed
Jewels: Well Executed.
Ethereals: Well executed.

Elite Uniques: Good idea, needs tuning.
Crafts: Good idea, needs tuning. Crafter Amulets, Blood Helms, Hit Power Gloves well done.
Runewords: Good idea, needs tuning. If no bots and dupes, Enigmia and Infinity are well balanced. Spirit, CtA, Insight, Grief, and to a lesser extent Stealth and Hustle need tuning.

Charms: Poor idea. Power creep and confuses a core mechanic: Inventory management.
Mercenary moving between acts: Poor Idea. Power creep and stat stick.
Class Specifics: Poor idea. Dilutes loot pool and restricts build diversity. Want a bow necro? The best bows are Amazon only. Massive +skills diminishes player distributed skills. 1 Point wonders are now 10 points.

Honestly I never understood the point of the mercenaries. Just seems unnecessary. Then when the made it so they could have gear it because an aura fest
