i don't think the original trade was completed, sounds like he was only part way through the trade when his greed took over when he got the existing pieces back and ran

I'd argue that both are equivalent. Would you rather lose 14 hours of hard work or 140 hours of fun video games? I think both suck pretty equally. 20K fg is 20K fg regardless how you acquired it.
