Doom does more dmg vs immunes. Fathom does more dmg everywhere else.
Doom pairs better with blizzorb. Fathom pairs better with pure blizz (pure blizz has 20 points in CM, doom -% resist helps make up for the gap).
Cold immunes will slow you down on lower pcount more than on higher pcount (you one-shot most things in low pcount except immunes).
Pure blizz usually performs better on higher pcount than blizzorb does.

conclusion:
doom and fathom aren't as a different as you think

I made doom on single player after already having a pretty well rolled fathom and yea, fathom is way better unless you are going against cold immunes. It is also nice having holy freeze for crowd control and tbh it’s nice to just use different items sometimes and having them be viable. Im having zero issues clearing any random p7 tz with doom but it does slow down with fathom at times. Doom isn’t a a bad melee weapon by any means but I wouldn’t really use it much in pvm otherwise.

I have been enjoying a base cold mastery build with doom + nightwings, rest of points are into +dmg synergies for blizz or tk so I can run some es. Does appear to kill faster than fathom vs cold immunes, with almost as good clear speed vs regular enemies. The -res from doom isn't reduced like infinity and cold mastery are vs sundered immunes, so stack this with a facet or new cold jewel in your nightwings and you are good to go. Come to think of it, I usually run vmagi but blizz ormus would probably be bis now, in pvm anyway.
