This sounds like an overflow with character data limits. There was a bug a long time ago that could be used to dupe by capping the data limit on character data. You could essentially drop the item and when you left the game it would still be there. The overflow prevented the server from saving the character data.

That could be. When you are crafting you have a lot of 1 square items. Instead of less bigger items. Maybe there is some memory limit and you can only have so much different items.
