I think I see what you mean, but people would get sick of ladder within the first month if they're limited to normal. However, more leaderboards is a good idea however you slice it. Might be a tad confusing, though. Imo a new pvp leaderboard could be cool (kind of convoluted to build, though... new arenas as well? idk but sounds like a blast for this game), but a SSF leaderboard where characters merge (like the rest) after ladder.. That'd be really cool. Absolutely no way to trade/drop items from other characters. Once an item has been picked up, the SSF player cannot pick it up.

The one thing I would find incredibly awesome would be: Ladder-only hybrid runewords (vanish once ladder ends). While I might not partake in new ladders, I think people would have a lot of fun with this. Unfair advantage? Just in LLD, but that'd be such a wealth-sink. Plus, from a coding standpoint: not hard at all. The base would change indicator (applying a potion/quest thingy or whatever imbued onto the runeword) would remain on the item as you add the subsequent runes.

hahaha. That summarized my thoughts exactly. There was some potential to the 3 tiers though.
Say the first "phase"/month (not difficulty). One were to change the loot tables of monsters or density.
First month normal density, but everyone gets 100% bonus mf.
Second month 150% monster density
Third 200%.

See. His idea was crap, but with... a little bit more thinking: it could be decent
