Yes and no, he picked a game that isnt that popular and doesnt get that many views. The only thing hes got going for him is that it might hit some of his target audience like you already mentioned.
If he makes quality content the algorithm will scoop him up just fine and he will do even better. He understands the fundamentals. It may be wiser for him to start a second channel for content surrounding other games, but he can also transition his current channel which is risky at first. But once the algorithm adjusts and his vids get sent to the right people he will grow fast. That’s my projection.
