1.Before making any major changes, put a final patch on current game(patch that does not imply balance/class/new items), that we could play like we can do with non-LOD version, aka Diablo II, because maybe it might break the "gameplay" we like for us, so we have a change to play D2R original.(also would be good for single player for people to pick which patch they want to play on).
2.There is no #2.
I can't wait for some changes and balances and new items, maybe new areas via portals or pure new content in future, BUT, this can go SOUTH and ruin whole game, so i like to have a backup option aka #1.

I guessing there is about 0.fuckall chamce of them running two game versions.
