Two methods, cheap and expensive version. Expensive version, there is a unique armor with crushing blow which looks exactly like tal armor. You both open the trade window to check out. The scammer will put real tal armor there for you to check out. He'll pick it up and put it back back and fort pretending to be impatient. During that time the trade button is red. Then he switches real tal armor with that one. You press the trade button as soon as it is not red anymore.
Cheap version and my prefered one, you pick up any of the 3 armors that look like tal armor with at least one socket and socket a chipped amethyst inside. Then you procede with the steps of the first paragraph.
TDLR: Tal armor is cheap, so no problem learning the hard way. The same trick can be applied to very expensive small charms or even life skillers. Always check before confirming ok.
