Your personal stash and character/inventory are all part of a single save file (.d2s = Diablo 2 save [for online characters these are stored on Bnet servers of course but you can see them for offline characters]) that's subject to the 8 KB limit, the shared stash is a separate file with its own 8 KB limit (might be per 8 KB per tab? not certain).
