This may be a well known bug but I'm new to smiter for PvP. I've noticed several times now that sometimes I'll have someone locked and will be smiting them. Each smite takes a chunk out of their life, and then suddenly when they get to what looks like 1 life the smite stops doing damage and they escape. Almost like it was poison. This has happened against characters without claw block or dodge (e.g. necros). Is this a thing? Do we know what causes it / how to prevent it? Is it all in my imagination?

Average smite dmg is 900, could be possible that your not taking all their life and probably 601 left as open wounds is 600 dmg. It could also be open wounds or psn from your grief. It could also be 40 rep life making them barley survive.

Crushing blow could make sense, but not sure I have that on my char (and even then if CB triggers doesn't that damage just stack on top of the base attack damage, or does it replace it?). Similarly not sure I have open wounds, though even if I did I think that would take time to bleed them down whereas this seems to happen instantly -- that is, I'm actively smiting them and taking chunks of life out and then they hit "zero" life from my smiting and just stop taking damage even though I'm still actively smiting them.

Now I'm wondering if it might be this "next hit always misses (NHAM)" bug I've heard of but never paid attention to. Like maybe I'm getting hit or mindblasted or something while smiting without realizing it (lots of team duels). Although, that wouldn't explain why whenever it happens it always seems to be when my opponent is at what looks like 1 life.

Regardless, I agree, I should just put 1 point into FoH, hah.

They are prob just almost dying and are running away with 300 life just inches from death, smite can’t miss. If you have gores or a blood belt then you have open wounds. Most of the time it’s rep life that can help them survive cause it’s replenishing as soon as they get hit, countering your damage instantly. They may in fact have 2 life left and the rep saved them. Or it’s something else but I can’t call it. The only time I’ve seen it was rep life but the rep life tables only work good on some classes.
