i have a question, if i have some "weird build" wouldnt a 30 max be the best jewel? if i remember correctly on my old zon it gave quite a bit more dmg then a 40ed jewel, and if you did go with a 40ed jewel, wouldnt a 40/9 dex be better than a 40/20 life? 9 dex = 27 life

Ed vs max dmg depends on your gear. If you have a lot of max dmg from your build(charms/items) use ed jewels/ect.
If you have a high dex build/use 160/60, I'd suggest more max dmg, cause your getting high end ED, from which you benefit more from having gg max dmg items.
9 dex also = 2-3% block im not sure, and a small amount of dmg. so 9 dex > 20 life

Andrew, it really depends on the build, the total ED% (including dex points here). Some people prefer to aim at a lower avg dmg with little dmg range (aka diamond bow and +min dmg items) other tend to go after the higher max dmg...

ed adds to min damage aswell... i tested the max jewels vs ed (in helm) on my zon and i lose 100ish max damage vs 100 ish min.
