I think the reality is that some people enjoy winning more than they enjoy competing, at least in my opinion. It's all within the rules, but choosing to chalk up a win because someone disconnected on a game that we all know is prone to crashes is...a choice.

I think this comes down to ethics. If I wanted to win I could have also played a 0 risk gameplay boxing you around and waiting for you to die to random nados but we would have dueled until 5 am. Do we really want D2R PVP to be like that? it's not fun for both the players and the viewers.

You would have easily dc'd 3 times before 5 am ;)

Honestly, if it's for fun or friendly it's one thing, but if you're actually competing, there's nothing wrong with playing in the way that gives you highest chance of success.

Nothing wrong with playing for fun, but you can't fault your opponents for playing to win in a tourney w/ a prize pool, however small it was. As annoyed as I was at the druid reboing his wolves(and I admit I complained a bit), he still played it properly and it led to him winning. It wasn't a for fun match.

As for taking a win on the DC, those were the rules. Sucks, probably wouldn't have done it myself, but w/e

No doubt. I'm not by any means implying that there's a 'right' or 'wrong' to play--just noting that the motivation to "win" can/does lead to specific decisions or playstyles.

What I would say though is that I wish more people would just be open in embracing the choices they make for the motivations that you've described in your post--which I feel are accurate. Throughout all kinds of PK events, including this tournament, you'll hear people say that they "had to play" a certain way due to some external factor rather than just saying that they played a certain way because it increases their chances of winning.

You want to chalk up a point because someone disconnected and it increases your chances of winning? Go ahead. You want to sit in 5 traps/play defensively v. a druid because it increases your chances of winning? Go ahead. Just own it though, imo.
