The problem with trying to host a placement tourney is trying to get everyone on the ladder at the same place at the same time. The top will rise to the top as the ladder progresses regardless of whatever placement at each person's convenience.

Exactly my thoughts, you're lucky to get 2 people together at a specific time. Imagine trying to get 14+ together, you'll be trying to run a placement tournament for 2 years.

I would probably just let the ladder shakeout a month or two and then award/implement crowns.
