It's the classic mechanical skill (plus some theorycrafting) vs. pure theorycrafting argument. Melee is really about pure optimization and math and probabilities, that also tracks with the rarities and statistical likelihoods of the very best rare items in this game. That's why there's such an appeal, because it is really about "outthinking" and "outmathing" your competitors, so there's a cerebral component to it. Kind of like playing a board game or something in person.
What Blood Moor PvP is is basically like playing soccer. While gear is important, mechanical skill and experience can make up for a lot of those gaps, and hence the efficacy of the very best items becomes very obfuscated. Some people prefer to enjoy the mathematical purity that comes with build optimization...kind of like the true in person gaming experience.
At the end of the day, people will gravitate to what gives them the best dopamine. I'll let you figure out that part for yourself.
But I can see the arguments from all sides. My perspective though? To be honest, if I really cared about making mechanical skill a factor in my enjoyment of things, there are better, more modern games to demonstrate that. SC2, Fortnite, Marvel Rivals etc...
But this game stands head and shoulders above all the rest when it comes to pure mathing/theorycrafting.
Also, like it or not...the melee scene is what drives the D2 economy. Without it...even the normal high end rares for PvP would not be worth as much...
